What Is the Objective in Craps?

The objective in a game of craps is to predict the sum of the numbers that come up on a pair of rolled dice. It is purely a game of chance as you cannot influence where the dice will land.

However, you can improve your payout depending on the type of bet that you place.

Basics in Online Craps: Craps Rules

A craps game follows a straightforward gameplay which is easy for all players to understand. Generally, the casino craps game follows the simple procedure below.

  1. The game starts with choosing the craps variant that you want to play. This includes a choice of games such as bank craps or simplified craps among others.
  2. Players place wagers on the possible outcome and the shooter rolls the dice. Depending on the value of the two dice, the game can come to an end or continue until there is a winner in the game’s rounds.
  3. After the winning numbers are paid out, you may choose to continue to the next round.

Craps Game Rules

It is wise to first understand the rules of how craps is played before you join other players at the craps table.

Naturally, the different markings and sections at the craps table may seem intimidating if you are new to the game. You should first understand what the craps table entails and how the layout affects the game’ betting options.

Luckily, we have covered the craps table layout basics in the section below to help you quickly familiarize yourself with craps gameplay.

How to Place Your Bet Online and at a Live Casino

1. Learn the craps table layout

Each section of the table layout represents a specific type of bet or bets that you can place. There are 3 sections that include 2 identical ones at both ends and a centre portion. The centre position contains the proposition bets, which are not advisable for beginners to place because of their bigger house edge.

In online casinos, the betting is automatic and you only have to click on the preferred chip’s image to indicate the bet that you want to place. For example, you can click on the ‘pass line’ area if you want to place a pass line bet.

When betting at a live casino, there are various staff members at the table to assist you. You can place your chips at the pass line area, come, and field areas.

You should brief the dealer on the amount that you want to bet on and the specific bet that you want to place. You should also look for the table that has the convenient bet limits that will suit your budget.

2. Which bets can you place?

There are many numbers and sections that are indicated at the table layout. They make up the bets that you can place. The game starts with the initial roll of dice, also called the come-out roll.

Pass line and don’t pass bets

They are the best bets that you can make as they pay even money and have a house edge of 1.41%. They are placed before making the come-out roll. They win as follows:

I. Pass line bet

If the come-out roll results in 7 or 11 you win for pass line bets. When the total value of the 2 rolled dice on a come-out roll is 2, 3, or 12 you lose and the round ends too.

If the come-out bet returns a value of 4, 5,6,8,9,, or 10, a point (equivalent to the value of the rolled dice outcome) is established and players aim to roll out the point. The pass line wager continues until the point value is hit, in which case you win and lose if a 7 is rolled and a new round will be started.

II. Don’t pass bets

If the come-out roll results in a 7 or 11, you lose and the round ends. You win if the value is 2 or 3. Some casinos consider it a win if the outcome is 2, 3, or 12 while some consider the 12 a draw. It is necessary to check the specific casino’s rules first.

If the outcome is 4, 5,6,8,9,10 a point is established and if 7 is rolled out before the point is hit you win. If the point is hit before landing a 7, the bet loses.

In essence, the don’t pass bet operates as the opposite of the pass line bet.

Come and don’t come bets

They come later after a come-out bet is placed and pay even money.

III. Come Bets

You win if you hit a Seven or Eleven during the first roll. You lose if a 2,3 or 12 turns up.  Turning out the other numbers establishes the point which then determines if you win or lose.

For example, if your point is 8, rolling an 8 again before hitting a 7 results in a win. Hitting 7 before your point results in a loss.

IV. Don’t come

You win if you hit a 2 or 3 on the initial roll. You lose if you hit a Seven or Eleven. Hitting the other numbers establishes a point where you will win if you hit a 7 and lose if the point is rolled.

Other bet options

There are more bets that are made after the come bet and the point has been established.

Odd bets

They are used to compliment the initial bets discussed above. They operate on the point that has been established in the above 4 initial options. They do not feature a house edge. They include the following:

  • Passline odds
  • Don’t pass odds
  • Come odds
  • Don’t come odds

Place win

They are made on the numbers 4, 5,6,8,9, or 10 after the come out roll and a point has been established. It’s a win if the number turns up before rolling out a 7.

Place lose

They are the opposite of the place win bet and win if a 7 comes up before the specific number on the point is hit.

Buy

You bet that a specific number is rolled out before hitting a 7. The bet comes with high payouts as you have to pay a small commission of 5%.

Lay

You bet that 7 will be rolled out before the specific number that you have chosen. It also comes with high payouts and you have to pay a small commission of 5%.

Big six and big 8

The bet results in a win if any 6 or 8 is rolled out before turning a 7.

Field

It is only available on a one dice roll. You win if the roll of the dice turns up a 2, 3, 4,9,10, or 12. You lose if a 5, 6, 7, or 8 is rolled.

Proposition bets

They can be placed on any roll and also come with better payouts but higher house edge.  You propose that:

  • Hard ways- That 4, 6, 8, or 10 hard number turns out before rolling out a 7. This includes double 2, double 3, double 4, or double 5. For instance, two dice each turning up a 3 would result in a hard 6. The payouts depend on the specific hard number.
  • Any seven-that the shooter rolls a 7
  • Any 11/Yo-that 11 comes up on the next roll
  • Any craps- that he rolls out a 2,3 or 12
  • Aces/snake eyes- that he rolls out a 2
  • Ace Deuce-that a 3 is rolled out next
  • Horn- shooter rolls out 2,3, 11 or 12
  • Box car-that the shooter rolls out a 12
